World Zoonosis Day
Commemorating the work of Louis Pasteur who successfully administered the first rabies vaccine on 6th July 1885, World Zoonosis Day is observed on this day every year. In this regard, the Department of Community Medicine, Andhra Medical College, Visakhapatnam, conducted a Health Awareness Campaign and Medical Camp at Indira Gandhi Zoological Park, Visakhapatnam.
As the staff of zoo are in close contact with animals and they are the first exposed, this health camp was organized to educate and screen the staff regarding common zoonotic diseases along with diabetes, hypertension etc. Along with faculty of Community Medicine, specialists from Pulmonology from Government Chest Hospital and Dermatology from KGH along with MBBS and PG students participated in this campaign. The Medical Camp was inaugurated by Dr Butchi Raju , Principal of Andhra Medical College, Smt Mangamma , Curator, Indira Gandhi Zoological Park and Dr Krishnaveni , Professor and HOD, Community Medicine followed by their message to the staff, students and doctors. The students created awareness among the zoo visitors and staff using posters and pamplets about common zoonotic diseases, their modes of transmission and the preventive measures to be taken to prevent their spread. All the zoo staff took part in the Medical Camp where they were screened for diabetes, hypertension, anemia along with ECG and tests for some of the common zoonotic infections.
