The Department of Pathology, Andhra Medical College / King George Hospital (KGH), has been at the forefront of academic and clinical training, offering robust educational programs for MBBS students, BSc Nursing, BSc MLT, DMLT, and various other paramedical courses, in addition to postgraduate (PG) medical education. The department ensures active involvement of all postgraduate students in research activities, nurturing a culture of academic inquiry and evidence-based practice.

Immunohistochemistry (IHC) was introduced in the department in 2012. Since then, focused marker studies have been undertaken on limited panels, especially in breast cancer and lymphomas, aiding in accurate diagnosis and personalized treatment planning. The department’s progress in IHC and diagnostic services has been significantly bolstered by the generous contributions of AMCANA (Andhra Medical College Alumni of North America) members, including Dr. Ravi and Dr. Seshu Sarma, and Dr. Seetharamayya Nagula.

The department has also been designated as a nodal center for the Integrated Centre for Hemoglobinopathies and Hemophilia (ICHH), playing a critical role in the diagnosis, management, and counseling of patients affected by these genetic disorders. Additionally, the department oversees the operations of the Blood Bank, through which essential transfusion services—including whole blood, packed red blood cells, fresh frozen plasma (FFP), and single donor platelets—are provided to patients across the hospital.

The Department of Pathology has a rich legacy of academic excellence and research contributions. Several faculty members have earned international recognition for their pioneering work. Notable among them are Dr. T. Bhaskar Menon for his seminal research on pathological studies on splenomegaly, Dr. C.R.R.M. Reddy for his groundbreaking work on “Chutta Cancer” (oral cancer related to reverse smoking), and Dr. D. Bhaskara Reddy for his studies on Indian Childhood Cirrhosis, which contributed significantly to understanding pediatric liver diseases in India.

The Department boasts the highest standards in diagnostic pathology and academic mentorship. With a tradition of excellence, it continues to contribute meaningfully to both medical education and patient care, upholding its reputation as one of the Premier Pathology Departments in the country.
